Black Cat:
This manga follows a team of bounty hunters and a thief involved in a war between the secret society (chronos) that controls the world and a revolutionary group (messengers of the stars. led be "Creed") that wishes to destroy them. To complicate matters, the leader of the hunters is the legenedary "Black Cat" the world's greatest assassin and gun man, retired from Chronos. Just so happens, Creed is his mortal enemy.
Now, this is a winning storyline. This manga SHOULD be good, but can't rise above its shonen forumala and terrible character mistakes. Now, this series IS a shonen series and has all the trappings. Constant power ups, ridiculous powers, duels to the death that aren't fatal, constant fighting, etc.
Now, lets start with the good. The Chronos assassins are fucking cool. Each carries an invincible weapon that they use with incredible skill. Shonen classics. These guys are badass. Then on the other side we have the messengers. Foolishness. Two have cool powers. Overall we have a good amount and quality of action, but only a few scenes truely stick out.
The worst element is the characters. AWFUL.
Train (Black Cat): Cool fighting style and rather amusing. However, his personality is inconsistent. Beginning of the manga he's a killer, but grows softer and softer for no real reason. He's the main character, but only really has two thoughts. "Grr...Creed killed my woman." and "Hey, lets eat..." Boring. No complexity.
Sven: Train's partner. Has a special left eye. Boring. Only thing he does is obsess over a little girl in a rather creepy relationship.
Eve: Don't even get me started on the whole Japanese pedophile deal.
Rinslet: Can anyone say "fanservice"?
Bottom line, if you need something to read, go ahead and pick this up. Its typical shonen nonsense with weak chacracters, but has its cool elements.
