Translation/Version of The Qur'an

I just finished listening to One Be Lo's album U7 recommended and I feel like I need to start studying the Koran...that song deceptacons really spoke to me...What insights can you gift from your readings and experiences...is there a version or translation of the Qur'an that lends itself better(or more true to original) to conscious study? What version does NOI use? What about 5%ers? Thanks & Peace...

I was recommended a translation by Abdulhaqq and Aisha Bewly by a source I have alot of faith in.

I have the Maulana Muhammed Ali copy and it is nice. I also keep another translation I can read without washing.

Is this album good? I might have to check it out..

Given the nature of this thread, I thought I would post an e-mail that I had received at work this morning, and my response to it (I will add my own emphases along the way):

And you have probably seen this one. Israel is the nation most often
mentioned in the Bible. But do you know which nation is second? It is Iraq! However, that is not the name that is used in the Bible. The names used in the Bible are Babylon, Land of Shinar, and Mesopotamia. The word Mesopotamia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The name Iraq, means country with deep roots.

Indeed Iraq is a country with deep roots and is a very significant
country in the Bible. No other nation, except Israel, has more history and prophecy associated it than Iraq.

And also.. This is something to think about! Since America is typically represented by an eagle. Saddam should have read up on his Muslim passages...

I just wanted to say that though the history illustrated here is pretty accurate, the verse from the Qur'an is uttlerly false:

This is totally made-up.

Here is the accurate verse, of what it really says in the Qur'an:

9.11] But if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, they are your brethren in faith; and We make the communications clear for a people who know.

2 different translations, similar to the KJV and the NIV of the Bible. But as you can see, neither one says anything about an "Eagle".

Also for one thing, Eagles are not native to the Middle East, only in the Americas. The Prophet Muhammad (who wrote the Qur'an) nor any of his tribe would never have even seen an Eagle, in order to be able to write about it.

Remember, knowledge is the only weapon against ignorance.

I got it from the library and found some of the liner notes very helpful...but after going on Amazon to purchase I noticed some troubling comment like:

THIS IS NOT HOLY QURAN! THIS IS MADE BY AHMADIYYA(QADIYANIS)

This is not the Holy Koran of the main stream 1.2 Billion Muslims but a edited copy of the Ahmadiya Movement (a sect who are not muslims, but claim to be one). A warning! to all muslims and non-muslims.

These are words of warning to readers not aware of the Ahmadiya movement, who's follower the writer is. Their beliefs contradict one of the basics of Islam, in that they claim their leader to be somewhat of a prophet, and that Prophet Mohammed (PBOH) is not the last prophet of Allah. Please be aware of this before you purchase this translation.

This is the best translation of the Holy Qur'an in English. Marmuduke Pickthall, Abdullah Yusuf Ali, and others all acknowledge the wonderful work done by Mr. Ali. Mr. Ali's translation is both lucid and intelligent. He is not biased against women, trying to make them subservient and docile. His translation contributed to Islam becoming more respected at the time of the first printing back in early 1900's.

I'm not in the Ahmaddiyya movement. But let me say that it never cease to amaze me how many people restate the same old lies, either because they are being vicious, or more probably-because they are just ignorant. I'm not being vicious in saying "ignorant", just noting that I'm using that word in the context of saying they don't know what they are talking about. The Ahmaddiyya's never said that Prophet Muhammad Ibn Abdullah (PBUH) was not the seal of the Prophets. They said that they believed the Madhi had come. That's the difference-that's it. If you don't believe that the Madhi came as they say (and I don't believe it, in all due respect)-then fine. If not, then you are just still looking for him to come.

Critics use that one thing to attack Mr. Ali's work, or to slander him and the Ahmaddiyya Movement. But then, the Ahmaddiyya's at least let women drive,don't force them to be as chattel, etc. See, when one looks to dwelve into the word for foolishness, then that is what one finds. And one you go seeking
a translation, filled with notes about why the translator gave the translation he did (and note that Qur'anic Arabic is different than Colloquial Arabic-just as the Queen's Engish is way different than American English) and seeking to revive and renew the interests of the world in Islam-that's the book to read!

Mr. Ali also gives painstaking history on issues of controversy in his notes to the text-including one of the finest defenses I've read against the critics of the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) (the Holy Qur'an gives the best!) This is the book to read, for all the reasons noted by the other supporters of this translations. I rather doubt if a single critic has ever read it. Instead, they are just repeating the same old tired lies.

This is the translation that shakes up the hypocrisy, lies, misapplications, and purposeful misinterpretations of some.

Well then, it is simple: open it up, check to see if there are 114 SURAHS.......Take a more "widely accepted" version of the QUR'AN, and make comparisons.

If it is not the QUR'AN, then throw it away. If it is, then pay no attention to such non-sense.

First of all, there are as many different translation of the QUR'AN, as there are for the BIBLE.

I have to say that, though I am no where near as proficient in ARABIC like the writer's friend would obviously be, the study notes are EXTREMELY helpful in gaining an understanding of the history and background of ISLAM and the QUR'AN.

Regarding the underlined aspects, let it be known that the so-called "widely accepted" version by the "1.2 BILLION MUSLIMS" has so many flaws in them, that it's not funny.

That sounds like the "million flies to shit" theory. IMO.

As the writer stated, do the knowledge for yourself, and place no faith in any one translation.

Now I own the Nooruddin translation and it is the most valuable thing I own. There are 114 surahs I am trying to live as it is prescribed and failing daily...I am improving though although it is slow because I prefer to learn the lessons solo in this test/text.

Very important to me...I have been with my earth for 5 years and I could never pretend to "rule" her or treat her without the respect she is due in our family. Your advice with reagrds to this translation was sage and I have greatly benefitted from your direction...thank you.
