Peace, The ancients looked at the world and recorded some of the deepest philosophical and spiritual works. I mean it’s so easy, all you have to do is look and observe the intelligent pattern within nature. Obviously, nature is based on scientific laws that control it. What controls these scientific laws? The 5 Elements… so simple yet so sophisticated. Earth Water Fire Wood Metal I’ve been examining these elements lately, looking at their nature and how the ancients came up with their conclusions. Water and Fire has been fascinating me. Light a candle and look at the fire. Go by the lake and look at the water. Water, the most receptive of all elements has the ability to take on any shape possible yet it is shapeless itself. It assimilates any environment it is in. Cool and passive. I see it as the dove of elements. Fire is the aggressive element. Burning and scorching as the driving force behind nature. The tiger of elements, adrenaline, sun, daylight, man. Abstract categories that underlie nature right there in front of our eyes. Everything in nature can be categorized into the 5 Elements. Look outside of yourself and discover the mysteries of the world, look inside of yourself and discover God. So simple yet so sophisticated. What else can we do but revere the ancients. The last thing a fish would find is water. PEACE

water receptive?
i believe in chinese 5 element theory that water is said to be the most volatile

PEACE PEACE
Yeah, I hear you on this one!
You can take a look at it from both sides.
Water being most receptive coming from a Kemetic point of view.
Water has no shape of its own. It is infinitely receptive to the shape it can take on. It can be calm and it can be extremely aggressive. It basically assimilates any environment it dwells in.
The Kemetians correlated water with the "nothingness" that sparked up the universe as it was infinitely receptive to eternal possibilities, shapes and qualities it can take on. This is called the Water of Nu.
I see Earth as being receptive in respect to the Sun and Moon and gravitational forces (in literal terms).
So yes...
I see both angles.
I developed my own perception of the elements when I examine them physically and apply onto spiritual phenomena.
I've been having trouble with metal though. Can you born the science?
Receptive to heat and cold and tough to alter physically. What can it be applied to?
PEACE
I also correlate the 5 Elements with emotions

PEACE
most of my understanding of 5 elements is an extension of my understanding of the 8 trigrams / elements which compose the i ching
remember that 5 is the number before 8 in the fibonacci sequence
metal corresponds with the trigram which is three solid lines
this is also referred to as 'heaven' and is also referred to as 'air'
in supreme math it would over-lap on both understanding and freedom
basically it denotes strength and creativity
an element that cannot be interrupted and is most likely to be that which does the interrupting
in seasons it relates to autumn and the time in which you harvest the results of your labors
in food it corresponds to pungent tastes
the kind of stuff that clears the sinuses and sets you straight
but will also punish you if you dont respect

i will use the same format as i did for the last one:
EARTH
earth corresponds with the trigram which is three broken lines (and would overlap on to the trigram with two straight lines at the bottom and a broken line at the top)
in supreme math it would represent wisdom (and overlap on to understanding)
basically it denotes being receptive - the way soil is fertile as the breeding ground for a seed - a place to temporarily dwell and provide nutrient to something which is growing
an element that does not act - rather plays its role as the conduit thru which something can TAKE action
it is also the phase which represents transformation - the way a growing tree will bend its shape in accordance to its environment so as to be able to absorb more light from the sun or more nutrient from its roots (or perhaps even to ensure better spreading of the seed)
in seasons it relates to the late summer and the period of time during which the worker relaxes a bit after toiling thru the summer and lets his body rest
he maintains his land as need be - but does not toil as much
in food it corresponds to sweet tastes and more dense type foods (proteins)
the kind of materials which lets the body build
but will also weigh you down with over-consumption

DAMN!!
This is an awesome thread. I keep looking for a spot to jump in, like Black girls playing double-dutch, but you guys seem to have this sewn down pat.
CIVIL, I love the chart that you posted. It's very helpful in visualizing how the Elements correspond and interact with each other.

WATER
water corresponds with the trigram which is one straight line surrounded by two broken lines and also overlap on the trigram for mountain which is two broken lines at the bottom and a solid line on top
in supreme math it would represent refinement and overlap on to equality
water represents volatility it also represents justice
the relation between the two is that a state of volatility exists between two barriers and the only thing that gets through is that which is refined - that which faces justice - that which understands equality
my favorite wu metaphor for water is on that track 'diesel' when ol' dirty makes reference to 'tarzan in a jar'
this element also refers to the devil - that element which takes the divine light - strips away its origins (the broken line at the bottom) and feeds it trick knowledge to limit its growth (the broken line at the top)
this is the phase where all excess must be stripped away
at the gates of heaven - you must leave all of your belongings behind or you will continue to burn
in seasons it relates to winter - the time where smart mammals hibernate the growing season has come full circle that which is not needed dies (who am i kidding - it falls away to take another form) so that what remains will be sure to produce a more fruitful season in the next growth cycle
it is a time of stillness
it is cold
it is harsh
in food it corresponds to slightly salty tastes (not the iodized salt we commonly use) - foods which are very high in trace minerals - potato - seaweed - chestnuts - most root vegetables foods which are warm temperature wise and warm in their composition beans - lots of beans - all types of beans and if you eat meat - this is the season for pork and fish also: walnuts - black sesame seeds - and i just had another one that just slipped my mind - oh yeah - and squash - all types of squash or turnips (even pumpkin)
as for your body organs - this period of time corresponds to the kidneys - the judge and jury of the body
step the wrong way - your own body will poison itself step the right way - everything flows divine
this is the element that corresponds to balance (which is why nutritionally it relates to foods with high contents of minerals - so your body has easy access to everything it could possibly need - no chance for deficiency - and since the foods are balanced - no chance for over-indulgence)
and consider: the reason why chaos is a pre-cursor to re-birth is for that very reason
in a state of chaos those who are righteous and recognize have easy access to everything they need to maintain their balance - and they have the wisdom to use it properly
all of the building blocks scattered and available the righteous gather what they need and leave what they dont
the PHOENIX rises from the ASHES
PEACE
winter hurts
