This is Crichton's latest. If you don't know, he wrote Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Andromeda Strain, Sphere and a couple other books turned movies. Anyways, the book was very interesting. Not because its a good book, but because of one interesting idea and the fact that it was so god awful. Essentially the book proposes the existence of a "State of Fear" created by lawyers, politicians and the media. This controls the masses, supports the fascist universities, supports the legal system, etc, etc. Good idea, right? Now, if you were to assume the existence of the state of fear, what would you say is the fear fueling it? Terrorism? War? Oh no. The book proposes that since the fall of the Soviet Union, the state of fear is an environmentalist conspiracy. Really. Environmentalists. Not Crichton's neocon buddies inventing a world war to pass new fascist laws, but environmentalists. Well, there's your book. Instead of having a real story, the book is a series of lectures with the most important character telling everyone how wrong they are about global warming. He's a thinly disguised avatar for Crichton and as such, speaks with real footnotes and research. Never mind that its skewed and one sided.
And, just when you thought that the propoganda couldn't get worse, you learn that all villagers are savage cannibals. Yep, thats what the author says. Avoid this piece of shit book.

misdirection & shell games...thanks for saving me the time on this one
the reviews I'd read said the same
In Rising Sun, crichton characterized the difference between US & japanese cultures by how they respond to problems...In the US we first want to find out who fucked up...In Japan first they fix the fuck then worry about who's culpable
Have you ever read his autobigraphy... Travels?

As State of Fear sucked so hard I recommend it for the future...but I did get a lot out of travels...Crichton dropped out of Harvard med like 2 months? before grad and then goes off on some crazy worldwide adventures...I read it when I was 14-15 and it made a big impression on me.
Supposedly its true

I'm gonna let SoF wear off before checking it out. If I can forget what an asshole Chrichton is, I MAY look into it.
