Motto: IGNORANCE IS BLISS. Stick with me here. This gets interesting.
Got cancer? Marketing Milk and Disease. Scroll two-thirds down the page to see the list of diseases that may be caused by milk. What's the point of becoming a vegetarian, if I'm going to allow the milk and dairy assholes to poison me (and torture cows)? I had pushed the scare stories about milk to the back of my mind - but for some reason, today was the day I saw the light - and it's not pretty. If you like milk, don't follow the links above. If you like grains (and milk) don't follow the link below.
Grains aren't safe. Bye bye, delicious bread: Civilization makes us sick.
The question of whether or not the lectins in grain causes cancer is still open, but there is certanly a good deal to suggest it. Lectins are well-known to cause cancer-like reactions in colon cells in a test tube...Stanislaw Tanchou's 1843 study that found a nearly perfect correlation between cancer in major European cities, and grain consumption. Tanchou predcted that no forager would ever be found with cancer, initiating a frenzied search to find the counterproof. Though no such forager was ever found, cancer often became commonplace among those same populations once they were settled into an agricultural lifestyle. Between the effects of grain and more recent environmental factors, it seems evident that the natural occurence of cancer among our foraging ancestors must have been negligible. In the modern United States, some 50% of men and 33% of women will suffer from some kind of cancer. Among foragers, we have significant difficulty producing even a single example.
Hold yer breath while reading:
Dairy is also a new and disastrous introduction to the human menu. All mammals lose their ability to produce lactase--the enzyme that breaks down the lactose in milk--when they reach maturity. At about 4000 BCE, a mutation occured in Sweden and the Middle East, allowing those populations to continue producing lactase into maturity...While humans with this mutation can digest milk, it remains something that the human body is ill-equipped for. Cow milk is tailor-suited for calves, just as human mlk is suited for human babies--but the requirements of cows differ markedly from humans. Consumption of cow milk has been linked to iron deficiency anemia, allergies, diarrhea, heart disease, colic, cramps, gastrointestinal bleeding, sinusitis, skin rashes, acne, increased frequency of colds and flus, arthritis, diabetes, ear infections, osteoporosis, asthma, autoimmune diseases, and more, possibly even lung cancer, multiple sclerosis and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Veganism is a sure-fire way to escape the horror of milk. Removing grain based products (which are many) is an order of magnitude harder:
Meet the paleolithic diet. The diet itself seems sound - people have been eating it for some time without dying. The one element that I don't like is the inclusion of meat - as much of it as you like. We're not going to have enough of that commodity to go around much longer...and if the outbreaks of Spanish Flu (40 million dead), SARS and the imminent H5N1 aren't enough to dissuade people from eating flesh, I don't know what will.
Here's a paleo recipe site. Lots of interesting stuff. It would be interesting to see how my health would hold up to a Vegetarian/Paleo diet combo that's completely free of:
potatoes, rice, corn, wheat and grains (no breads or cakes), rye, yams, meat, chicken, fish, sugar, coffee, chocolate, beans, peas, peanuts, parsnips, canola oil, mayonaisse, legumes (no tofu or soy based products) and salt.
Bejezus, that's a LOT... At least I can still have eggs. And wine...I think
God, I need a drink. Reading that link about Soy just sucked the air out of my lungs. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST! Why can't women breast-feed their babies? HAVE PEOPLE ALL GONE FREAKING NUTS??
Approximately 25 per cent of bottle-fed children in the US receive soy-based formula - a much higher percentage than in other parts of the Western world. Fitzpatrick estimated that an infant exclusively fed soy formula receives the estrogenic equivalent (based on body weight) of at least five birth control pills per day. By contrast, almost no phytoestrogens have been detected in dairy-based infant formula or in human milk, even when the mother consumes soy products.
Scientists have known for years that soy-based formula can cause thyroid problems in babies. But what are the effects of soy products on the hormonal development of the infant, both male and female?...
...It goes without saying that future patterns of sexual orientation may also be influenced by the early hormonal environment. Male children exposed during gestation to diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen that has effects on animals similar to those of phytoestrogens from soy, had testes smaller than normal on manturation. (sic)
Learning disabilities, especially in male children, have reached epidemic proportions. [my hate mail and popular "culture" confirm this]. Soy infant feeding - which began in earnest in the early 1970s - cannot be ignored as a probable cause for these tragic developments.
As for girls, an alarming number are entering puberty much earlier than normal, according to a recent study reported in the journal Pediatrics. Investigators found that one per cent of all girls now show signs of puberty, such as breast development or pubic hair, before the age of three; by age eight, 14.7 per cent of white girls and almost 50 per cent of African-American girls have one or both of these characteristics.
New data indicate that environmental estrogens such as PCBs and DDE (a breakdown product of DDT) may cause early sexual development in girls. In the 1986 Puerto Rico Premature Thelarche study, the most significant dietary association with premature sexual development was not chicken - as reported in the press - but soy infant formula.
Please Morpheus, you can take me out of The Matrix, any time now...
