I've been a fan of the various SUPER HEROES through out the years, in their various incarnations, but I think my absolute fave HERO has to be....... CAPTAIN MARVEL. Known by many as "SHAZAM", this hero is unique in many ways, from his secret identity (and how he maintains it), to his scope of powers, to his history. CAP's powers are a unique in origin, in that they have been granted to him by a wizard by the name of SHAZAM, whose name serves as an acronym for the GODS of various pantheons. CAPTIAN MARVEL draws the various characteristics from the following GODS: SATURN = COURAGE HERACLES = STRENGTH ATHENA = WISDOM ZEUS = POWER ATLAS = STAMINA MERCURY = SPEED Though CAP's abilities are drawn from the GREEK GODS, his origin and history is tied to EGYPT, and especially to one specific EGYTPIAN, BLACK ADAM. Thousands of years ago, during Ancient Egypt's 19th Dynasty, a man named Teth-Adam became the first to be blessed with immense supernatural powers by the wizard Shazam. When Teth-Adam spoke the wizard's name, he was magically transformed by a bolt of lightning into "Mighty Adam." As Mighty Adam, he had the powers of six of the Egyptian Gods: SHU = STAMINA HERU = SPEED AMON = STRENGTH ZEHUTI = WISDOM ATON = POWER MEHEN = COURAGE For years, Teth-Adam acted as a hero throughout Egypt and eventually came into the service of Prince Khufu, whom he would stay with until Khufu's murder. Shortly after the death of Khufu, Teth-Adam lost sight of his purpose and began using his powers for selfish gain. He gained a new name during this period, one that was whispered with fear throughout Egypt: Khem-Adam, translated into English as "Black Adam." Partly blaming himself for Teth-Adam's horrible corruption, Shazam stripped Adam of his powers, placing them within a scarab amulet. The amulet was entombed with Pharoah Rameses II, and remained untouched until the late 20th century, when husband-and-wife archaeologists C.C. and Marilyn Batson uncovered it. The couple were brutally murdered by an associate, Theo Adam, who soon after unlocked the secret of the scarab and tapped into Black Adam's power and memories. The Batsons' son, Billy, was chosen by the wizard Shazam as his new champion, Captain Marvel. BILLY has but to speak the name of the wizard (SHAZAM!), and a bolt of lightning strikes BILLY, and he instantly becomes the WORLD'S MIGHTIEST MORTAL. The wizard SHAZAM becomes quintessential, in that he is the conduit for the powers of the entire MARVEL family, and their pantheons: In addition to harnessing the powers for CAP and BLACK ADAM, the wizard also harnesses it for MARY MARVEL and CAPTAIN MARVEL JR. MARVEL JR's power sources are identical to CAP's, but MARY's is different. SELENA = GRACE HIPPOLYTA = STRENGTH ARIADNE = SKILL ZEPHYRUS = SPEED AURORA = BEAUTY MINVERA = WISDOM MARY's powers come from the GODDESSES, as opposed to the GODS for her brother. Just like her brother, MARY MARVEL's powers make her more than a match for SUPER GIRL as well. One of the most interesting things about CAPTAIN MARVEL, is the fact that he is the one super hero that is equal in strength and power to SUPERMAN. Though it is not often demonstrated, CAP has been able to beat SUPERMAN, due to the magical powers that CAP possesses, and SUPES' weakness to magic. The most recent scenario of when CAP beat SUPE is when SUPE and BATMAN were fugitives, and CAP and HAWKMAN had to bring them in. SUPERMAN usually has to find some means of outsmarting CAP, or even enlisting the aid of another hero (usually WONDER WOMAN, whose powers are GOD-based as well, but also sometimes BATMAN who is known for being a genius of all the heroes) in beating CAP. But more often than not, they usually end up working together to stop common threats, as they are super-heroes after all. All in all, the most interesting thing about CAPTAIN MARVEL, is the fact that he's slated to have his own movie in the near future, which THE ROCK will play the good CAPTAIN. a1259.g.akamai.net/f/1259/5586/1d/images.art.com/images/PRODUCTS/large/10097000/10097475.jpg[/img] Long live SHAZAM!! ;D

Hmm...Hands down it'd have to be The Preacher. He was minding his own business when he was suddenly struck down by a mysterious force. His church was destroyed if I remember correctly. When he came too, he was the most powerful man in the world (well, almost), posessing the word of God. This basically meant that anything he ordered was manifested. He'd tell someone to go fuck themselves, and they would. This power stemmed from a creation of God called Genesis. If I recall cortectlly, God still had some control over it though. Regardless, The Preacher, his girlfriend and his vampire buddy Cassidy embarked on a mission to hold God accountable for abandoning the world, kill the descendents of Jesus to prevent the apocalypse, and destroy the Illuminatiesque secret society pursuing them. And then there's the Saint of Killers. Of of the baddest villains I've ever seen. Despite posessing the word of God, our hero generally uses guns and his fists to exact his vengeance. Easily one of the greatest comics ever. Terribly brutal and sadistic (some of the worst I've seen), but the message is incredible.
Now, another favorite is Ichi. His superpower is his bloodlust. And I do mean lust. He dons black body armor with a 1 (ichi) displayed on the back. This symbolizes his status as the number 1 hitman/assassin (hence Koroshiya Ichi) as well as his sexuality. It's also his used name. His weapon of choice is bladed metal boots which can kick through even solid rock. With these weapons he dismembers his enemies with his taekwondo (or karate) style. Now, the thing about Ichi is that his greatest opponents aren't human. He carves his way through men, women and children with ease, but as he was trying to destroy the wickedness inside of him, he was decieved by an old man with the Yakuza. Twice he was fashioned into a living weapon. The first time his parents and classmates created him. His parent's S&M games turned him into a sadist and his class mate's bullying turned him into a killer. His mind was destroyed by these atrocities and he was reduced to the mental state of a child. Now, the story continues in two ways. In one version Ichi is awakened through assassination attempts and a shady, masochistic girlfriend after being released from a mental institution. In another, Ichi kills his way through highschool only to realize his true power after he meets a rival sadist. In both versions, the same old Yakuza is pulling the strings.

King Mob Speaking of which, I didn't explain him much. Not sure of his powers. He deals in various forms of magics derived from esoteric sources as well as traditional weaponry such as guns and bombs. He's also skilled in time travel of sorts. Then there's the drugs. And he worships a God with an elephant head. And something about a scorpion? Then something about a videogame? They lost me after a couple issues. Basically, he and his men are part of a group called the Invisibles in which he leads a cell. Based in Insvisible College, the Invisibles fight a group called the Archons of Outer Church. These invaders want absolute control over humanity. The Invisibles supposedly strive for freedom, but in reality are rather shady themselves. Aside from the little details such as being the Illuminati, they've been known to back stab eachother constantly. Half the time, Invisibles can;t even recognize eachother. Then theres the fact tht Invisible College is also known as Outer Church. Anyways, King Mob's ultimate decision after giving up on violence is to make the revolution invincible by making them want it. He becomes a capitalist and sells the revolution as a video game. Outer Church as well as the brainwashed masses eat it up.

Ichi: The Preacher: Best comic ever. I don't like some of the Texas red-neck politics, but that's a minor issue. This series is the best ever.

You could always go with the classics. Spiderman, Superman, etc. Most kiddie heros would be about like the rangers I presume.

If so, then there's a cartoon-adapted comic out for this. NOTE: Not the actual comic version. These are 2 different things. The cartoon-adapted comic is more "kid friendly", and geared more towards people who enjoy the cartoon, but not necessarily the intricate stories of the regular comic. Here's a link: JUSTICE LEAGUELike O said, the classics are a best place to start. PEACE
