The Invisibles 10/10:
A British comic regarding a group of rebels known as the Invisible's fighting against those who wish to enslave humanity. Acolytes I believe they were called, their headquarters being Outer Church. Based in Invisible College, the Illuminati group moves freely through time and space, relying on various magics and esoteric knowledge to defeat their enemies. Pretty much every conspiracy you can think of is in here. The characters are excellent, such as the leader King Mob, the voodoo killer who's name I can't remember and of course Harlequinade who is an all time favorite character. The ideas are usually unique and incredible. The expanded alphabet (forgot how many letters) definitely stood out. If you can undertstand it, its worth a read.
Hellsing 10/10:
Two British secret societies, the Vatican and the Hellsing organization (after the founder Van Helsing), battle eachother, vampires and undead nazi's in South America. The characters are the best thing about this series. Father Anderson and Alucard (think about it), best decribed as villains really define the series. Their fanatical devotion to their masters and their causes makes them two of the greatest characters ever. Anderson, working for the Vatican special forces is a specially engineered human who slaughters all that oppose him with long knives as he quotes scriptures. One amazing scene is when he's called to battle and comes in quotung Psalms 82. Alucard, the main character, works for Hellsing and is pure evil. As a vampire he kills by the dozens and has no qualms about murdering anyone at anytime and in fact enjoys killing innocent victims. These two characters alone make the series amazing. What also helps is the Christian element. Not that they're preaching, but the stylized version of Christianity is great. The guns say "Jesus Christ is in Heaven now" on the side. Their jet says "We are on a mission for God". The introduction of the Jude Iscariot is filled with biblical references regarding Judas. Cool as hell.
The Preacher 9/10:
Excellent comic dropping deep ideas left and right. Basically a big "Fuck you" to Christianity and really does some damage to the concept of an all-loving, omnipetent God. The story line is phenomenal. A secret society of Christs decendants work to bring about Armegeddon while a preacher battles them, God (!), and the Saint of Killers using the word of God as his weapon. I only deduct points because the humor is rather out of place at times.
Berserk 7/10:
A middle aged fantasy revolving around a mercernary who only knows how to kill. He finally finds a home with teh band of the Hawks and fights alongside his commander to build a btter world. The first several volumes kick all types of ass, but when they start adding kids and elves and magic and shit, it becomes weak.
Gantz 9/10:
Bizarre sci fi story involving aliens, "nanovampires", and the people who hunt them. Basically, people who die are summoned to a room with a black ball, given weapons and told to kill a target. If they survive, they get points towards freedom and a chance to go back home till next mission. The series is incredibly violent and chaotic with ANYONE able to die, including main characters. Excellent.
Ichi the Killer (Koroshiya Ichi) 10/10:
Good lord this is violent. This is some other shit. Id go as far as to call it pornography. It touches on pretty much every form of depracity you could think of in a shockingly hardcore fashion. The overt sexuality of the whole deal is something that has never been seen before. And by sexuality, I mean as expressed metaphorically and literally through violence, with subtle and overt imagery. Our "hero", the number 1 hitman (hence the name Ichi) is one sexual or phallic symbol after another. The number 1 on his back, the blades that come from his shoes when its time for violence are like an erection when its time for sex, even going so far as to kill with the axe kick. Then theres the fact minor fact that he ejaculates all over his dead enemies. You have to read this to understand how deep it as as it touches on thevery nature of violence, sexuality and even the readers reaction to these things. At severa points the character aren't speaking to eachother, but seemingly to you. Read this. Its a whole new level of smut, but drops knowledge on a level that can't be dealt with in any other manner.
Fire Candy 10/10:
The pain of addiction kills abandoned children after the governments perverse sexuality destroys society. Excellent.
