Aleister Crowley: The Midnight Messenger

Gnostic forces were progressing in the ascendancy during the nineteenth century, and into this milieu was Edward Alexander Crowley born; he later took the name Aleister. He was born on 12 October, 1875. According to Kenneth Grant, head of an OTO breakaway sect, the Typhonian Tradition, Crowley first became aware of the existence of spiritual powers in 1898 when he read The Cloud upon the Sanctuary by Karl von Eckartshausen. Crowley was 22 at the time and set out to contact the hidden Order which the book describes. His efforts led to his initiation into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn on 18 November, 1898. He assumed the magical name Perdurabo (I shall endure).

In August, 1903, Crowley married Rose Kelly, his 'scarlet woman,' whom he had met in Paris. They proceeded on an extended honeymoon, and whilst in Sri Lanka, they went trekking through the jungle. Whilst standing on the shores of a lake, Crowley decided to shoot enough furry bats to make himself a waistcoat. One bat landed on Rose, and Crowley had some trouble detaching its claws. That night, Crowley was awakened by the noise of a squealing bat. He then saw Rose, completely naked, clinging with her arms and legs to the wooden frame that supported the mosquito net. As he pulled her down, she bit and spat and squealed, and she had to be shaken into wakefulness. Crowley noted that it was the finest case of obsession that he had ever had the "good fortune" to observe.

When Rose later discovered she was pregnant, they decided to return home to England. En-route they went to Cairo, where they took a flat. (Incidentally, Rose went on to have a daughter who was named Night my Athatour Hecate Sappho Jesabel Lilith, and who died in tragic circumstances. Rose died an alcoholic).

In Cairo, Crowley proceeded to dress in Persian garb, pretending to be an oriental prince, Chioi Khan (being Hebrew for the Beast). Crowley's mother, a strict Plymouth Brethren, had believed her son to be the beast ( number 666 ( of Revelation 13:18.

In Cairo, Crowley attempted a series of invocations to summon up elementals or demons. Rose sank into a curious state of mind in which she kept repeating: "You have offended Horus." It was Rose who in fact introduced Crowley to the elemental, Aiwass. Through Rose, Aiwass told Crowley that he was to go into his workroom at precisely midday on 8, 9 and 10 April, 1904 and write down what he heard for the next hour. The message began: "Had! the manifestation of Nuit." And thus The Book of the Law came into existence. It is also known as "Liber AL vel Legis" (meaning 'divinely revealed Book of the Law') or Liber AL for short. Whilst The Book of the Law was received in 1904, it would not be published until 1913, just nine months before the 'Balkan War' (later to be called World War One).

According to Crowley, " 'The Law of Thelema' [ie, Liber AL], revealed in Cairo in 1904, has come to replace the outworn creeds, the local codes; to help the peoples of the world march on to a new era of peace and happiness." Thus Crowley becomes a medium and 'false prophet' within the context of James 4:5: "They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world's viewpoint; and the world listens to them."

Crowley preached the New Aeon of Horus, the "new era of peace and happiness," but the path to this "new era" would necessarily be bathed in blood. A moment's reflection on the course of the twentieth century confirms that the revolutionary and violent prophecies contained within The Book of the Law have been fulfilled, and there are other events yet to occur.


Forerunner to Crowley
Crowley did not just appear out-of-the-blue. The groundwork had been laid for millennia, for his creed is Gnosticism. Essentially, a Gnostic is one who seeks illumination, and sets out to become a divine being; basically, an alchemical transmutation of evil into good achieved through the exercise of one's own will. Christians believe that this transmutation can only occur through the grace of God as may be extended to an individual; no amount of self-will can achieve this transmutation of one's spirit.

Gnostic leaders are spiritualist mediums who take counsel and direction from spirits or "Invisible Masters." The ideals of Gnostics are utopian, and the ends justify the means. Crowley was a Gnostic master, as was a forerunner of his, Adam Weishaupt. Many readers have more than likely 'completed' Conspiracy Theory 101, and are familiar with Herr Weishaupt. For those who may not know of him, some background follows.

Weishaupt was born in Catholic-dominated southern Germany on 6 February, 1748. He was Jesuit-educated and attained a very influential university position. In accordance with the "needs of his period" (Kenneth Grant), he reawakened the Order of the Illuminati. Weishaupt's occult activities culminated in the French Revolution, and this spark ruptured the course of history.

Shortly after the French Revolution, the Marquis de Luchet said, "This society [Illuminati] aims at governing the world. Its object is universal domination." He called the Illuminati "a subterranean fire smouldering eternally and breaking forth periodically in violent and devastating explosions."

Weishaupt wrote the following to a fellow Illuminatus: "We must consider how we can begin to work under another form. If only the aim is achieved, it does not matter under what cover it takes place, and cover is always necessary. For in concealment lies a great part of our strength. For this reason we must cover ourselves with the name of another society. The lodges that are under Freemasonry are in the meantime the most suitable cloak for our high purpose, because the world is already accustomed to expect nothing great from them which merits attention. As in the spiritual Orders of the Roman Church, religion was, alas! only a pretence, so must our Order also in a nobler way try to conceal itself behind a learned society or something of the kind."

On 26 December, 1993, no less an organ of the fourth estate, "The Economist" published the following under the heading, "The Good Network Guide": "Beyond all these networks lies the mother of all networks, the Order of the Illuminati, known to some as the True Rulers of the World. Its age will remain uncertain until the story of the last days of Atlantis is better known. Though this secret body has hovered unseen over all history, its most public flowering was in the Enlightenment. Adam Weishaupt, a former Jesuit (who provided much of the inspiration for Shelley's Frankenstein (revealed its purpose and system of mutual surveillance to the world on May 1st 1776. Since then the order has taken a keen interest in another newborn of that year. It is significant that many American presidents have been Illuminati; and the Illuminati symbol of the eye in the pyramid still graces the dollar bill.

"The conspiracy is immense and terrifying, stretching from Hassan-i-Sabbah, 11th-century Assassin, to Ian Fleming (who caricatured the order as "SPECTRE"). It is the network of those who run networks. Given its power, you should assume that anyone writing about the order must be either lying or part of a conspiracy to confound you. In wondering about the Illuminati, merely remember this. You have never arrived." (Note the motto of the Assassins: "Nothing is true. Everything is permitted").

Angelo Roncalli who was to become Pope John XXIII, and who convened Vatican 2, is reputed to have been a member of the Illuminati. The Illuminist eye in the pyramid was used on his papal cross. He is also reputed to have met with Crowley. It was Vatican 2 which led to the Catholic church seizing the world-wide ecumenical agenda and which authorised the idolatrous elevation of Mary to goddess status.

After the French Revolution, the Order of the Illuminati disappeared. In 1904, an Austrian Adept named Karl Kellner repeated Weishaupt's feat, and re-established the Illuminati through a sect known as Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO). Crowley took over leadership of OTO in 1922. The spirit guides of the Gnostics had clearly directed that the Illuminati once again step into the public realm but, in this instance, through OTO.

The Book of the Law
Crowley is not an aberration. He is part of an historical process which has yet to reach its climax. The ruling spirits of this world relayed the primary plank of their program to Crowley, and this is contained in The Book of the Law. For human beings, the real struggle is not against each other, but against the evil cosmic powers which govern this dark age. Crowley was their medium, but on several occasions as he wrote down The Book of the Law, Aiwass chastised Crowley for being concerned about what he was writing.

As part of my own spiritual journey as a Christian, I eventually found myself looking into Crowley. It took sometime before I recognised that The Book of the Law was such an important work. I am not writing this article to make the facts fit in with my world-view. What I found is that The Book of the Law has been fulfilled to a large degree, and that its contents tie in strongly with the Revelation. Just as Jesus sent his angel to reveal future events to John, so did Satan send a spirit being, Aiwass, to Crowley. Both works are eschatological (the doctrine of last or final things).

The Book of the Law says that the god of war and vengeance, Ra-Hoor-Khu-It (Horus), is now positioned on his seat of power. His human incarnation will occur, and he will be in the form of a child, the False Prophet or Antichrist. He is the offspring of the union of Hadit (Satan) and Nuit (Babylon). This union and its "fruit" is referred to in Revelation chapter 13. The Book of the Law tells us that Satan is the coiled serpent, and he is about to spring. Christians will be put to death. Through war and chaos, the goddess (Nuit/Babylon) will be placed in a position to be worshipped, and her offspring, the child, will be mightier than all the kings of the earth, although one of these rich "kings" will finance him.

There are three underlying principles in The Book of the Law for Thelemites (Thelema is Greek for determination through choice; inclination to desire, pleasure, will) to live by:

1. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.
2. Love is the law, love under will.
3. Every man and every woman is a star.

A curious feature of Gnosticism is that in the early stages of the Gnostic quest, one is driven by terrible despair, and simultaneously, a powerful upsurge of love. In the utopian quest for self-perfection, a 'good' person in the world's eyes is one who is seemingly self-realised and self-reliant. That person develops the will to be the master of his/her world, even though many other persons may lose in the process. To become a selfish 'superman' is the Gnostic goal, and those who are not so capable or who do not share this ideal are meant only to serve and be used. Sin is no longer a restriction on one's will to fulfill the most powerful desires. Nietzsche longed for 'the fair beast' (die blonde Bestie) ( the strong, beautiful beast which shall rule the world, and act in all things according to its will.

W.B. Yeats, the Irish poet and contemporary of Crowley in the Order of the Golden Dawn, wrote about the Gnostic utopia thus: "...an aristocratic civilisation in its most completed form, every detail of life hierarchical, every great man's door crowded at dawn by petitioners, great wealth everywhere in few men's hands, all dependent on a few, up to the Emperor himself, who is a God dependent on a greater God and everywhere, in Court, in the family, an inequality made law."

The Book of the Law in the Context of the 20th Century
Satan through Aiwass declares that Christianity is dead, and that Crowley is to be the prophet of the neo-pagan system which would emerge. Moral values and compassion as exercised would be relative to the exigencies of the times. The neo-pagan emergence would birth on an altar of moral enfeeblement and blood sacrifice. The strong of will would take control of the world.

The most dramatic instance of human sacrifice occurred under the Nazis in World War II. The German lyric poet and essayist, Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) prophetically wrote of a time when Germany would go berserk:

"Some day there will awake that fighting folly found among the ancient Germans, the folly that fights neither to kill nor to conquer, but simply to fight. Christianity has ( and that is its fairest merit ( somewhat mitigated that brutal German lust for battle. But it could not destroy it: and once the taming talisman, the Cross, is broken, the savagery of the old battlers will flare up again, the insane Berserk rage of which Nordic bards have so much to say and sing. The talisman is brittle. The day will come when it will pitiably collapse. Then the old stone gods will rise from forgotten rubble and rub the dust of a thousand years from their eyes; and Thor will leap up and with his giant hammer start smashing Gothic cathedrals..."

The gods did indeed awaken. According to Trevor Ravenscroft in "The Spear of Destiny," every year from 1926 to 1942, the Germans sent out parties which contacted Tibetan initiates, the intention being to gain their psychic help and deep alliance with the devilish forces which rule this world. A Tibetan colony was established in Germany in 1929, and the monks were known in Germany as "The Society of Green Men," because of their links with the Green Dragon Society of Japan.

In Berlin, Hitler met regularly with the leader of the Tibetan community who was a very gifted and accurate clairvoyant. Himmler shared Hitler's interest in the occult, and set up the Nazi Occult Bureau. This incorporated into one organisation the Thule group, the Vril Society and the German branch of OTO (Crowley's magical order).

Between 1936 and 1939, Crowley paid a number of visits to Germany. It is known that a woman called Martha Kunzel repeatedly urged on Hitler the wisdom of adopting The Book of the Law as his guide. Hitler rejected this, as he wanted Mein Kampf to be the holy book of Germany. By the time the war had broken out, Crowley had become strongly anti-Hitler, and said that "Britain would knock Hitler for six" (an analogy from cricket: the worst thing a batsman can do to a bowler is hit the ball clear out of the field, and thus score six runs). The German branch of OTO had by the time of the war been banned and most of its members were in concentration camps.

Hermann Rauschning, governor of Danzig, had been very close to Hitler, and recorded many of their conversations which were published in a book called Hitler Speaks. Rauschning openly acknowledged Hitler's obsession with the occult, and found that very often Hitler was paraphrasing or expressing an idea from The Book of the Law (often word for word).

"I will tell you a secret," Hitler told Rauschning, "I am founding an order. It is from there that the second stage will emerge the stage of the Man-God, when Man will be the measure and centre of the world. The Man-God, that splendid being, will be an object of worship. But there are other stages about which I am not permitted to speak."

"Hail! ye twin warriors about the pillars of the world! for your time is nigh at hand" (The Book of the Law 3:71) The "pillars of the world" are the powerful and greedy emotions of people, and the twin warriors are the spirits that would cause the two world wars energised by the compliance and sinfulness of the "pillars of the world." Hitler knew exactly what he was about, and fulfilled his pre-destined role. The cornerstone of Novus Ordo Seclorum was laid.


Let's Get Philosophical for a Moment
At the heart of The Book of the Law is the instruction: Do what thou wilt. Under "Law," this is a conscious development of one's personal will to power. Nietzsche's message of the superman is that, on the will to power theory, values are mutable. Thus one's own values prevail, rather than conforming to the values of the collective which endeavour to pursue peace and harmony. When the question of basic values is open in society, the essential victory has been won.

Identifying with the conscious will to power, one wants to set the terms, insisting on the principle, "I will not serve." Satan thought much the same thing: "I will climb to the sky; higher than the stars of God I will set my throne. I will sit in the mount of assembly, on the summit of Zaphon [the abode of the gods]: I will mount the back of a cloud ( I will match the Most High" (Isaiah 14:13,14).

Satan is the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and his lie to humans is to "eat" from him in order to become a divine being. The Book of the Law says that every man and every woman is a star (1:3). The "sovereign power" of thought is a real and actual fact: if I "will" to kick up my foot, so it is done. If I am powerful enough, and I will order the dropping of an atomic bomb on civilians, so it is done. If technology is but a tool of people, then surely it is controlled by will.

Through development of the conscious will, we are in the process of strengthening the ego. As created human beings, the realm of ego consciousness and the spiritual and psychic realm are indissolubly united with the body. As the ego grows stronger, it detaches itself more and more from the body.

In the individual will to power, one's ego detaches from the collective ego. It is a struggle and a creative act. Such an act brings on a sense of loneliness; it also introduces suffering, toil, trouble, evil, sickness and death into a person's life as soon as this separation is perceived by the ego. When Adam and Eve made their decision to will to power rather than will to God's will, God told Adam: "Cursed be the ground because of you; by toil shall you eat of it all the days of your life: Thorns and thistles shall it sprout for you. But your food shall be grasses of the field; By the seat of your brow shall you get bread to eat, until you return to the ground ( for from it you were taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return" (Genesis 3:17-19).

To be the outsider or revolutionary is to be isolated and alone. The individual is pitted against the world, and becomes part of a higher, different unity. To become a "star" and will to power is to have knowledge of good and evil and is accounted sin, and one is expelled from paradise. To Gnostics, this feeling of privation becomes the driving force of the world process. The way of salvation lies in heightening consciousness with the will to become 'Sons of God'. Jesus Christ says that such transmutation can only occur if a person is spiritually reborn from above (John 3:3-8) through repentance the regenerative work of the Holy Spirit.

Where does God fit into all this?
The Crowley/Gnostic self-hood process fits in with the prophesied progression of the human race. In this Present Age wherein God's grace to be spiritually reborn has been extended to non-Jews, the majority of people will remain cold of heart and will grow in sin. Paul says people will be self-loving, money-loving, brutal, hateful of good, plus a number of other unpleasant attributes (2 Timothy 3:2-5).

The message of The Book of the Law is eschatological. Revelation is also eschatological. The Present Age will not last much longer, for the Christian heritage is being expunged, and the fig tree (Holy Land) has blossomed. Thelemites believe that this age will be followed by the 2,000 year reign of Horus. Christians say the Present Age will be followed by the 1,000 year reign of Jesus Christ on Earth, to be followed by the last judgement. Thelemites now say "Abrahadabra" (meaning Father-Satan-Father); Christians say "Amen! Come Lord Jesus."

Perhaps Thelemites should take heed to the words of the nineteenth century mage, Eliphas Levi: "To will evil, is to will death. A perverse will is a beginning of suicide."

I found it interesting how Crowley himself believd to be fighting AGAINST the black brotherhood/illuminati/relgious & moral authority...Some here would claim he is the epitome of an evil/black magician. I've no time for his sexual perversions or selfishness, but IMO he did have one hell of a sense of humor...

most of what I have heard about Cagliostro, Saint Germain & the Court de Gebelin came from reading Robert Anton Wilson's less famous "Historical Illuminatus Trilogy" which are as close to a "real history book" in novel form as I have ever seen

I am not trying to be a crowley apologist...my fundamental issue with his philosophy is:

Remember the Order of the Solar Temple? In 1994 the neo-Templar secret society, founded by Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret, embarked on its very own cultic auto-destruct sequence, when 69 of its members, including children, either killed themselves or were murdered in their chalet-compounds in Switzerland and Quebec. (The trigger for the group's termination appears to have been the ritual slaying of a three-year old infant with a wooden stake, on order of Di Mambro.)

The OST was not just screwy and dangerous; it was also implausibly, yet undeniably, connected. Alex Constantine tells us to what in his Psychic Dictatorship in the USA:

French-Canadian journalist Pierre Tourangeau investigated the sect for two years. A few days after the mass murder, he reported that the sect was financed by the proceeds of gun-running to Europe and South America. Simultaneously, Radio Canada announced that Jouret's Templars earned hundreds of millions of dollars laundering the profits through the infamous Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), closed by authorities worldwide in 1991. Montreal's La Presse observed: "each new piece of information only thickens the mystery."

So this seemingly outlandish Order, which played out deadly Templar fantasies, were themselves yet another facet of the even more bizarre military-occult complex. Like the fascist-Masonic P2 Lodge, the Solar Temple violated the conventions most people presume for the world. And yet, there it is: one more crypto-criminal node in the international arms trade, laundering hundreds of millions through BCCI.

And because of the secret Order's deep and weird politics, we should pay some attention to its mythology. Perhaps particularly to the teaching that members would be reincarnated, after martyrdom, on a planet orbiting Sirius, the dog star.

Though Sirius must mean little now to most urbanites bedeviled by light pollution, for much of human history our nights were lit chiefly by the stars. And the brightest star in the sky - and the nearest star visible with the naked eye - certainly has loomed large in the Western Hermetic tradition.

Consider Freemasonry, from which the OST liberally borrorowed, and the high regard in which it holds Sirius, and with whom - Set/Lucifer - the star is identified.

In Morals and Dogma, Albert Pike writes that Sirius was "the inventor of language, grammar, astronomy, surveying, arithmetic, music, and medical science; the first maker of laws; and who taught the worship of the Gods, and the building of Temples." He adds that the "Blazing Star" pentagram of Masonic Lodges represents Sirius, the "Guardian and Guide of our Souls."

Alice Bailey, successor to Helena Blavatsky and founder of the Lucifer, later Lucis, Trust, went Pike one better, and claimed that Sirius was actually the source of a "higher form" of Masonry. She wrote:

One great fact to be borne in mind is that the initiations of the planet or of the solar system are but the preparatory initiations of admission into the greater Lodge on Sirius.... The first four initiations of the solar system prior to the first cosmic initiation. The fifth initiation corresponds to the first cosmic initiation. that of "entered apprentice" of the Lodge Sirius. The sixth initiation is analogous to the second degree in Masonry, whilst the seventh initiation makes the Adept a Master Mason of the Brotherhood of Sirius. A Master, therefore, is one who had taken the seventh planetary initiation, the fifth solar initiation, and the first Sirian or cosmic initiation.

And from Bailey's The Rays and the Initiations:

These ancient mysteries were originally given to humanity by the Hierarchy, and were - in their turn - received by the Hierarchy from the Great White Lodge on Sirius. They contain the clue to the evolutionary process, hidden in number and words ...they veil the secret of man's origin and destiny.

Bailey's remark that initiations into Earthly orders are preparatory for admission into Sirius' Great White Lodge reminds me of our discussion here regarding the resemblance of UFO abductions to occult inititations.

Robert Temple, author of The Sirius Mystery, summarizes Bailey's views this way: "The Sirians have tried hard to civilise us without much success. Freemasonry is meant to be one of their civilising forces here. (Of course the corrupt Masonic lodges such as P-2 would form no part of this.)"

(Naturally Temple would find Bailey's remarks interesting, as his central "mystery" concerns the apparent oral tradition of the Dogon people of Mali that Sirius has a companion star, which it does, though it wasn't discovered by science until the mid-19th Century. Temple infers from the Dogon's teachings that they were visited in antiquity by Sirians. It's another discussion, but I'll just say here I'm not persuaded by Temple's work, nor convinced of the rigour of his methods.)

Kenneth Grant, student of Aleister Crowley and founder of the "Typhonian OTO" and its "Cult of Lam," writes in The Magical Revival that Crowley "unequivocally identifies his Holy Guardian Angel with Sothis (Sirius), or Set-Isis." Set, of course, will be familiar to those who've followed the career of Colonel Michael Aquino, who created the Temple of Set when he found Anton LaVey and his Church of Satan not serious enough in their devotion to the Left Hand Path.

Adam Gorightly, in "Ritual Magic, Mind Control and the UFO Phenomenon," writes how, in the 1950s and '60s, alleged contactee George Hunt Williamson is said to have "summoned forth certain denizens purportedly from Sirius, conversing to them in the same 'Enochian' or 'Angelic' language used by John Dee and Aleister Crowley." Williamson also claimed that a secret society on Earth had been in contact with Sirius for "thousands of years, and that the emblem of this secret society is the eye of Horus, otherwise known as the all-seeing eye."

In "Sorcery, Sex, Assassination, and the Science of Symbolism" (available in Jim Keith's anthology Secret and Suppressed: Banned Ideas and Hidden History), the late James Shelby Downard argues that a Sirius cult exists today at the highest levels of US military intelligence. Downard goes so far as to say that the viewing chamber of the Palomar Observatory is used for its rituals, which evoke those of ancient Egypt, and are performed in the star's focused light.

And according to David Ovason's book The Secret Architecture of our Nation's Capitol, Freemasons oriented and consecrated Washington to the astrological representation of Lucifer, Sirius.

You can't be Sirius?

It's not my contention that entities from Sirius are now, or ever have been, an influence upon human affairs. Rather, I would suggest that the Sirius mythology is a purely human construct, a very ancient and very natual one, which has been exploited by trickster, transdimensional entities much closer to our home. (John Keel's ultraterrestrials, who may reside a "vibration" or two away from our own reality.)

That Sirius would be of global significance to both ancient and modern human cosmologies should be no surprise. After all, "intrinsically", Sirius is 20 times brighter than our Sun, and more than twice as massive. Now consider what our mediocre and virtual dwarf star must look like from Sirius. It's highly unlikely we would be noticed at all by hypothetical Sirians, let alone the object of their intense study going back millenia.

Yet entities have claimed to be from Sirius. Well, naturally they have. They've claimed a lot of things. The entities with whom we share hyperspace found a ready-made cult, as Cortez did in Mexico. And not just the Sirius cult, when we consider such things as the possible counterfeit apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The human religious impulse has been exploited for millenia, and not just by humanity. Why would transdimensional entities disabuse the primatives living behind their veil of flesh of the notion that they are Sirian gods? Hell, it sounds like a party. And since when have such tricksters told us the truth about anything?

I know how crazy this sounds. But as I've said before, how crazy any of this sounds to us is beside the point. In fact, its craziness can be a stumbling block to our apprehending the processes at work. Because what is at work is only tangentially about us, even though it could get us all killed - or worse. It is about those for whom none of this is crazy: not the ceremonial robes, not the ritual sacrifices, not the reverence for Sirius, not the worship of Lucifer. Hey, not even the laundering of hundreds of millions of dollars in arms deals.

In Cosmic Trigger, Robert Anton Wilson writes that "July 23 is the day when, according to Egyptian tradition, the occult link is most powerful between Earth and Sirius." The 23rd is the Sumerian and Egyptian New Year, when Sirius rises from behind the Sun. This marked the beginning of the "Dog Days" of Summer, which the Egyptians observed until September 8, "when the last rituals to Sirius were performed."

Is this really why the elite will gather next month in Bohemian Grove? To celebrate New Year's in July?

Chapter XII: The Left-Hand Path—"The Black Brothers"

It is the introduction of the word "self" that has raised such prickly questions. It really is a little bewildering; the signpost "Right-hand Path", "Left-hand Path", seems rather indecipherable; and then, for such a long way, they look exactly alike. At what point do they diverge?

Actually, the answers are fairly simple.

As far as the achievement or attainment is concerned, the two Paths are in fact identical. In fact, one almost feels obliged to postulate some inmost falsity, completely impossible to detect, inherent at the very earliest stages.

For the decision which determines the catastrophe confronts only the Adeptus Exemptus 7° = 4°. Until that grade is reached, and that very fully indeed, with all the buttons properly sewed on, one is not capable of understanding what is meant by the Abyss. Unless "all you have and all you are" is identical with the Universe, its annihilation would leave a surplus.

Mark well this first distinction: the "Black Magician" or Sorcerer is hardly even a distant cousin of the "Black Brother." The difference between a sneak-thief and a Hitler is not too bad an analogy.

The Sorcerer may be—indeed he usually is—a thwarted disappointed man whose aims are perfectly natural. Often enough, his real trouble is ignorance; and by the time he has become fairly hot stuff as a Black Magician, he has learnt that he is getting nowhere, and finds himself, despite himself, on the True Path of the Wise.

Thereupon he casts away his warlock apparatus like a good little boy, finds the A.'.A.'., and lives happily ever after.

The Left-hand Path is a totally different matter. Let us start at the beginning.

You remember my saying that only two operations were possible in Nature: addition and subtraction. Let us apply this to magical progress.

What happens when the Aspirant invokes Diana, or calls up Lilith? He increases the sum of his experiences in these particular ways. Sometimes he has a "liaison-experience," which links two main lines of thought, and so is worth dozens of isolated gains.

Now, if there is any difference at all between the White and the Black Adept in similar case, it is that the one, working by "love under will" achieves a marriage with the new idea, while the other, merely grabbing, adds a concubine to his harem of slaves.

The about-to-be-Black Brother constantly restricts himself; he is satisfied with a very limited ideal; he is afraid of losing his individuality—reminds one of the "Nordic" twaddle about "race-pollution."

Have you seen the sand-roses of the Sahara? Such is the violence of the Khamsin that it whips grains of sand together, presses them, finally builds them into great blocks, big enough and solid enough to be used for walls in the oasis. And beautiful! Whew! For all that, they are not real rocks. Leave hem in peace, with no possible interference—what happens? (I brought some home, and put them "in safety" as curiosities, and as useful psychometrical tests.) Alas! Time is enough. Go to the drawer which held them; nothing remains but little piles of dust.

"Now Master!" (What reproach in the tone of your voice!) All right, all right! Keep your hair on!—I know that is the precise term used in The Vision and the Voice, to describe the Great White Brother or the Babe of the Abyss; but to him it means victory; to the Left-Hander it would mean defeat, ruin devastating, irremediable, final. It is exactly that which he most dreads; and it is that to which he must in the end come, because there is no compensating element in his idea of structure. Nations themselves never grow permanently by smash-and-grab methods; one merely acquires a sore spot, as in the case of Lorraine, perhaps even Eire. (Though Eire is using just that formula of Restriction, shutting herself up in her misery and poverty and idiot pride, when a real marriage with and dissolution in, a real live country would give her new life. The "melting-pot" idea is the great strength of America.)

Consider the Faubourg St. Germain aristocracy—now hardly even a sentimental memory. The guillotine did not kill them; it was their own refusal to adapt themselves to the new biological conditions of political life. It was indeed their restriction that rotted them in the first instance; had Lafayette or Mirabeau been trusted with full power, and supplied with adequate material, a younger generation of virtue, the monarchy might still be ruling France.

But then (you ask) how can a man go so far wrong after he has, as an Adeptus Minor, attained the "Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel"?

Recall the passage in the 14th Aethyr "See where thine Angel hath led Thee", and so on. Perhaps the Black Brother deserts his Angel when he realises the Programme.

Perhaps his error was so deeply rooted, from the very beginning, that it was his Evil Genius that he evoked.

In such cases the man's policy is of course to break off all relations with the Supernal Triad, and to replace it by inventing a false crown, Daäth. To them Knowledge will be everything, and what is Knowledge but the very soul of Illusion?

Refusing thus the true nourishment of all his faculties, they lose their structural unity, and must be fortified by continuous doses of dope in anguished self-preservation. Thus all its chemical equations become endothermic.

I do hope I am making myself clear; it is a dreadfully subtle line of thought. But I think you ought to be able to pick up the essential theorem; your own meditations, aided by the relevant passages in Liber 418 and elsewhere, should do the rest.

To describe the alternative attitude should clarify, by dint of contrast; at least the contemplation should be a pleasant change.

Every accretion must modify me. I want it to do so. I want to assimilate it absolutely. I want to make it a permanent feature of my Temple. I am not afraid of losing myself to it, if only because it also is modified by myself in the act of union. I am not afraid of its being the "wrong" thing, because every experience is a "play of Nuit," and the worst that can happen is a temporary loss of balance, which is instantly adjusted, as soon as it is noticed, by recalling and putting into action the formula of contradiction.

Remember the Fama Fraternitatis: when they opened the Vault which held the Pastos of our Father Christian Rosencreuz, "all these colours were brilliant and flashing." That is, if one panel measured 10" x 40", the symbol (say, yellow) would occupy 200 square inches, and the background (in that case, violet) the other 200 square inches. Hence they dazzled; the limitation, restriction, demarcation, disappeared; and the result was an equable idea of form and colour which is beyond physical understanding. (At one time Picasso tried to work out this idea on canvas.) Destroy that equilibrium by one tenmillionth of an inch, and the effect is lost. The unbalanced item stands out like a civilian in the middle of a regiment.

True, this faculty, this feeling for equilibrium must be acquired; but once you have done so, it is an unerring guide. Instant discomfort warns one; the impulse to scratch it (the analogy is too apt to reject!) is irresistible.

And oh! how imperative this is!

Unless your Universe is perfect—and perfection includes the idea of balance—how can you come even to Atmadarshana? Hindus may maintain that Atmadarshana, or at any rate Shivadarshana, is the equivalent of crossing the Abyss. Beware of any such conclusions! The Trances are simply isolated experiences, sharply cut off from normal thought-life. To cross the Abyss is a permanent and fundamental revolution in the whole of one's being.

Much more, upon the brink of the Abyss. If there be missing or redundant even one atom, the entire monstrous, the portentous mass must tend to move with irresistible impact, in such direction as to restore the equilibrium. To deflect it—well, think of a gyroscope! How then can you destroy it in one sole stupendous gesture? Ah! Listen to The Vision and the Voice.

Perhaps the best and simplest plan is for me to pick out the most impor- tant of the relevant passages and put them together as an appendix to this letter. Also, by contrast, those allusions to the "Black Brothers" and the "Left-hand Path." This ought to give you a clear idea of what each is, and does; of what distinguishes their respective methods in some ways so confusingly alike. I hope indeed most sincerely that you will whet your Magical Dagger on the Stone of the Wise, and wield most deftly and determinedly both the White-handled and the Black-handled Burin. In trying to express these opinions, I am constantly haunted by the dread that I may be missing some crucial point, or even allowing a mere quibble to pass for argument. It makes it only all the worse when one has become so habituated by Neschamic ideas, to knowing, even before one says it, that what one is going to say is of necessity untrue, as untrue as it is contradictory. So what can it possibly matter what one says?

Such doubts are dampers!

What I thought were shapes of rocks, rather felt than seen, now appear to be veiled Masters, sitting absolutely still and silent. Nor can any one be distinguished from the others.

And the Angel sayeth: Behold where thine Angel hath led thee! Thou didst ask fame, power and pleasure, health and wealth and love, and strength and length of days. Thou didst hold life with eight tentacles, like an octopus. These adepts seem like Pyramids—their hoods and robes are like Pyramids.

Their sandals were the pure light, and they have taken them from their feet and cast them down through the abyss; for this Aethyr is holy ground.

Herein no forms appear, and the vision of God face to face, that is transmuted in the Athanor called dissolution, or hammered into one in the forge of meditation, is in this place but a blasphemy and a mockery.

And the Beatific Vision is no more, and the glory of the Most High is no more. There is no more knowledge. There is no more bliss. There is no more power. There is no more beauty. For this is the Palace of Understanding; for thou art one with the Primeval things.

Drink in the myrrh of my speech, that is bruised with the gall of the roc, and dissolved in the ink of the cuttle-fish, and perfumed with the deadly nightshade.

This is thy wine, who wast drunk upon the wine of Iacchus. And for bread shalt thou eat salt, O thou on the corn of Ceres that didst wax fat! And that bright light of comfort, and that piercing sword of truth, and all the power and beauty that they have made of themselves, is cast from them, as it is written, "I saw Satan like lightning fall from heaven." And as a flaming sword is it dropt though the Abyss, where the four beasts keep watch and ward. And it appeareth in the heaven of Jupiter as a morning star, or as an evening star. And the light thereof shineth even unto the earth, and bringeth hope and help to them that dwell in the darkness of thought, and drink of the poison of life. And for his Work thereafter?

So we enter the earth, and there is a veiled figure, in absolute darkness. Yet it is perfectly possible to see in it, so that the minutest details do not escape us. And upon the root of one flower he pours acid so that the root writhes as if in torture. And another he cuts, and the shriek is like the shriek of a Mandrake, torn up by the roots. And another he sears with fire, and yet another he anoints with oil.

And I said: Heavy is the labour, but great indeed is the reward.

And the young man answered me: He shall not see the reward; he tendeth the garden.

And I said: What shall come unto him?

And he said: This thou canst not know, nor is it revealed by the letters that are the totems of the stars, but only by the stars.

And he says to me, quite disconnectedly: The man of earth is the adherent. The lover giveth his life unto the work among men. The hermit goeth solitary, and giveth only of his light unto men.

And I ask him: Why does he tell me that?

And he says: I tell thee not. Thou tellest thyself, for thou hast pondered thereupon for many days, and hast not found light. And now that thou art called NEMO, the answer to every riddle that thou hast not found shall spring up in thy mind, unsought. Who can tell upon what day a flower shall bloom?

For though a precious stone be hidden in the sand of the desert, it shall not heed for the wind of the desert, although it be but sand. For the worker of works hath worked thereupon; and because it is clear, it is invisible; and because it is hard, it moveth not.

All these words are heard by everyone that is called NEMO. And with that doth he apply himself to understanding. And he must understand the virtue of the waters of death, and he must understand the virtue of the sun and of the wind, and of the worm that turneth the earth, and of the stars that roof in the garden. And he must understand the separate nature and property of every flower, or how shall he tend his garden?

Thus for the Masters of the Temple; for the Black Brothers, how?

For Choronzon is as it were the shell or excrement of these three paths, and therefore is his head raised unto Daäth, and therefore have the Black Brotherhood declared him to be the child of Wisdom and Understanding, who is but the bastard of the Svastika. And this is that which is written in the Holy Qabalah, concerning the Whirlpool and Leviathan, and the Great Stone.

These that thou seest are indeed the Black Brothers, for it is written: He shall laugh at their calamity and mock when their fear cometh. And therefore hath he exalted them unto the plane of love.
