P.E.A.C.E to the Cradle
I'm trying to put on a bit of muscle and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good vegeterian diet or foods of high protein that are good for a muscle building program.

PEACE ALL:
I get me protein from the following places:
NUTS BEANS SOY etc.
I would like to hear CIVIL's break-down of protein sources as well.
In the meantime, please know that a little protein goes a long way.......It doesn't take much protein to fuel the body, and the body will actually wash out or x-punge the x-cess.

PEACE
too much protein will especially be tough on the kidneys because that is generally where your liver will send it if it gets overwhelmed
so as SAM7 said - go easy
you can also look at spirulina and bee pollen if you are looking for small portions that will really pack a punch
those two gems are also great for the immune system as the proteins contained in them are nearly identical to the composition of the protein which make up cells in the human body
easily absorbed and easily put to use
as far as nuts and seeds go i would rank pumpkin seeds as number 2 for men after hemp (due to their high zinc and magnesium content) then i would go with flax seeds, sesame, almonds, and brazils
they all taste great too
experiment with them
mix them
throw them on foods
make seed milk
PEACE

Peace To All! Knowledge Supreme: Everything that was said is right and exact. Hemp seed is an extraordinary source of complete and highly bio-available protein (really, so-called amino acids). It contains more proteins than any meat. 60 grams of hemp seeds gives you about 25 grams of protein. But see, sometimes it is not even the quantity of the amino acids (organic micronutrients that constitute proteins) found within the food, but its bio-availability. Because hemp seeds contain the globulin (set of proteins) 'edestin', it closely resembles the proteins found in our bodies. Thus, hemp protein is extremely compatible with the human body. And no, hemp seeds do not contain THC. In addition to the protein, as LIGHT have stated, hemp also contains essential fatty acids (EFA's). EFA's are basically fats which are essential to the body as they cannot be produced. They play an important hormonal role regulating various physiologic activities. Moreover, hemp contains other goodies such as fiber, chlorophyll and minerals such as iron and calcium as well as some B vitamins. So yeah, do not be hesitant to spend some money on this nature's perfect food. Not only will it build lean muscle tissue, it will make you healthier in general. My suggestion is that you eat 30-60 grams (2 to 4 tablespoons) of the seeds right after your workouts. I would make smoothies with fruits. If you want a recipe, just hit me up. Regarding protein, I think these micronutrients are misconstrued. 'Experts' say that we need to consume 1-1.5 grams of protein per 1 kilogram of body weight. Therefore, a person who weighs 80kg is supposed to be eating at least 80-120 grams of protein on a daily basis. Being under this assumption, this person resorts to meat, milk and eggs to reach this baseless quota. TOO MUCH PROTEIN IS NO GOOD. Surplus protein makes the body acidic, thereby prone to disease. Internal organs take a beating as well (peace LIGHT) such as your kidneys and liver. Inorganic compounds and by-products of protein metabolism (urea salts, uric acids) are deposited onto body tissues and cause major health problems. One form of arthritis - gout - is due to the excess uric acid in the joints (a result of heavy protein consumption). In my opinion and self-experience, 25-40 grams of plant protein on a daily basis is sufficient to keep the body healthy. Perhaps a slightly more intake is needed when on heavy workout regimes. I would eat lots of beans as well. Navy beans being my favorite are a very rich source of protein. However, combine them with a slice or two of whole grain bread as beans on their own will not provide a complete protein (this is important). Again, for recipes, just hit me up. One serving of beans (about 100 grams) will provide about 25 grams of protein. These are also rich in some important minerals and dietary fiber. Eat a lot of seeds and nuts. Eat them raw and try soaking them for a few hours before eating (you don’t have to do it but it does make them more nutritious). Try sunflower, pumpkin, sesame and flax seeds, they are delicious and nutritious (rich in protein as well). Put these seeds onto your salads, sandwiches, in your smoothies or just eat them on their own as snacks. Soy is an excellent source of vegetarian protein. However, a lot of people do not tolerate soy. It also has some other bad stuff but also have some benefits. Try out the beans or pure soy beans powder and make your fruit smoothies with them. I would supplement myself with SPIRULINA (follow this link and do the knowledge to my post). Spirulina probably (along with bee pollen) contains the HIGHEST content of protein out of every substance on Earth. ONLY 15 grams of spirulina will provide about 8 grams of complete protein. Spirulina is definitely a supplement for people who work out. Try getting this supplement (organic and sun-dried, it's expensive but don't look at the price) and drink a tablespoon of it in the morning with a glass of water (mix it with juice if you can't stand the taste, you should be good though). This will balance out your pH levels and keep your blood glucose steady. Another 'supplement' (these substances are nature’s whole foods, not isolated nutrients) is BEE POLLEN. It contains an abundance of complete protein. Again, follow the link to find out more. THEREBY, summarizing what was said, eat beans a few days a week, drink/eat your spirulina or bee pollen in the morning, focus on hemp seeds and eat an abundance of them, eat other seeds as well and make sure to eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables on a daily basis (your body will suffocate from your own acids if you don't eat them and heavily work out). Try eating several smaller meals daily rather than big ones. One or two meals should consist of JUST fruits and vegetables (a few apples or bananas will suffice). Make salads with green leafy vegetables and sprinkle hemps seeds (or any other seeds or both) on them. The ideas are countless. If you have some more questions, just hit me up. In Peace, I-Son

Peace, These are the hemp products that I buy myself. It is a Canadian company called Manitoba's Harvest. They specialize in hemp products. Their hemp seeds are produced without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides and herbicides. For a smaller pack of hemp seeds (60 grams or two portions), I pay $2.40 CDN. The bigger pack costs me $7.99 CDN (I forgot how many grams in it but it is much more economic than the smaller pack). Keep it mind this is in the Canadian currency. I don't know if this company ships to the United States, but if you come across it, GET IT! If not these, make sure you buy natural, not genetically modified and free of pesticides products (organic if possible). You can import from the internet as well. I am sure your health food store will carry them. If not, ask around.
