There are 8 trigrams composed of only three bars. Those are what you see displaed in the bagua. The hexagrams are each made up of two trigrams, their meanings being loosely derived from the combinations of elements in the trigrams that form them. For example, Earth and Earth gets you "field" or "reteating", while heaven and heaven is force.

hex = 6 tri = 3
hexagram is a 6 lined figure trigram is a 3 lined figure
a hexagram is composed of 2 trigrams (3 + 3 = 6)

8 trigrams
8 trigrams in all combinations form 64 hexagrams

if you totalled all the trigrams there would be 128

8 trigrams. That means they can be matched to 8 other trigrams including themselves. 8 times 8 is 64. 64 hexagrams. Math ends there.

Peace! I understand that the Bagua is significant to the I-Ching. 8 of the 64 trigrams are included in it. How do you cee this, and is their arrangement relevant? yes that arrangement is significant it corresponds with the cycle if you are familiar with supreme math: 1 = fire = knowledge 2 = earth = wisdom 3 = lake = understanding 4 = air / metal = freedom / culture 5 = water = refinement 6 = mountain = equality 7 = thunder / wood = build / destroy 8 = wind = born obviously with some adjustments PEACE

I got my copy last night and did some preliminary studies.
More questions:
Each Hexagram/Chapter seems to be divided into four sections:
1. The Hexagram itself. 2. Overall Judgment (which seems to be an explanation of the Hexagram). Is this Confucius’ explanation? 3. Image. What is this about? What image? The Hexagram? 4. Components. I understand this section breaks down each line. Broken lines are yin (represented by number 6?) and full lines are yang (represented by number 9?). What is the significance of this? Why is every line broken down like this?
The I-Ching seems to utilize a lot of animal symbology. For instance, Hexagram 1 talks about a dragon. I can see the dragon as being the aggressive, fire, yang force driving the world. The Creative.
So far, I am pretty perplexed and at the same time can feel the tremendous wisdom that can be gained from this work.
There is a lot of Mathematics to it as well.
I feel like a whole bunch of diggers who unintentionally are about to find a gold mine!
Amazing!
PEACE!

yes
the image that a hexagram could conjure in the mind - a metaphor in nature
i will get back to you on this
cant answer intelligently right now
it has to do with divining techniques of forming hexagrams - altogether not too important

Also, I Ching makes me thing about how they came up with the idea of the Hexagram.
What a beautiful concept!
